Review:
We got in late and drove around back roads following, what
I thought was the toll road man's directions. We ended up
backtracking and there it was on the main road (rt.8) with
the driveway blocked. I wasn't sure if it was open at all.
We went back in the morning and the cones were gone and
there were cars in the lot. It's lovely! It got it's name
because it is "between Pittsbugh and Mars." (Mars is an
actual town in Pa.) Anyway, the food was very good. We ate
breakfast. The western omlette was good, though it could
have used some cheese on top. My daughter had pancakes
that were way to much for her to finish. They tasted very
good. The homefries were just like I like them, NOT fried
till crispy brown. The waitresses kept the coffee cup full
and hot. I would have liked them to be more knowlegable
about the history of the diner. They were both in their
50's and probably worked there a long time. All they could
tell me was that it was built in New Jersery and where the
manufactor's name plated was located. The service was
excellent, though. We went back on Sunday morning and the
place was packed, so we didn't eat there because we were
pressed for time.
Also in the south-west Pa. area was "Lavern's Diner" in a
Pittsburgh subburb that's hard to explain directions to,
and harder to find, and the "Cycle Diner" in Tarentum. This
one is sitting next to the Harley-Davidson Shop. Both of
these have limited hours during the week (7-3?) and only
the Cycle was open on Sat. till 5. Both closed on Sunday.
We didn't get to eat in either one of those, but plan on
returning....
